After being let go from her job in a swanky hotel just weeks before Christmas, Hattie is feeling lost. ![]() ![]() ![]() I gave the book 5 stars for many reasons. ![]() McDermott's other trickster tales include: Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest, Zomo the Rabbit: A Trickster Tale from West Africa, Jabuti the Tortoise: A Trickster Tale from the Amazon, Anansi the Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti, and Pig-Boy: A Trickster Tale from Hawai'i. I also thoroughly enjoyed the flat, geometric illustrations and the contrast of Coyote's brilliant blue against the sandy, red-brown of the Southwest. From the start, you know the Coyote will never be able to accomplish his goal, but you read anyway because you want to experience his comical calamity. ![]() I think I enjoyed this tale because it reminded me of Wile E. And to this day, coyotes are a dusty gray color. He lands in a pool of water on a mesa, chases after the crows who laugh at his misfortune and tumbles in the dirt. But he predictably falls to the ground when the crows decide he is undeserving of their talent. In this tale, he wants to fly like the crows, and in the beginning they want to help him. He is always getting in trouble, usually because he is rude, boastful and proud. Coyote: A Trickster Tale from the American Southwest is appropriate for children in kindergarten through second grade.Ĭoyote, the trickster-fool, is common in Native American folklore. ![]() Blue by kiriko nananan6/4/2023 ![]() ![]() That being said, I'm slightly uncomfortable with how pop culture in shows (and porn, but then again, it is porn) tend to 'fetishize' sexual/romantic relationships between women, mostly when it's geared towards the male gaze. For the longest time, I've identified as a lesbian but my sexual preference for partners is not something I consider as a social or political statement. In fact, it was only two years ago that I came out as bisexual (and it's been grueling to even admit it). I think it stems from the fact that I have been in relationships with women, both romantic and sexual. As enjoyable and exciting as I find shounen ai/yaoi no matter how ridiculous the lack of real character development or plot are just to make way of what I deem 'sexy times' between pretty boys, my views are a lot more critical when it comes to its counterpart, shoujo ai/yuri. ![]() The black company book review6/4/2023 ![]() ![]() Someone mentioned that it read like a Fantasy version of the Vietnam War, and I can see where they’re coming from. Plenty of colorful characters join the tale, as the Company experiences highs and lows. What follows are various postings and assignments, as the narrator (known as Croaker) tries to stay alive and sometimes tries to be the conscience for a bunch of heartless bastards. ![]() ![]() They end up signing on with a dubious benefactor who turns out to be more than just sketchy, (s)he turns out to be downright evil. The mercenary group, the titular Black Company, has a long and storied history, but has fallen on bad times. The conceit of the book is that the narrator is a medic for a mercenary unit and also its chronicler-historian. I found a copy of Chronicles of the Black Company, which collects the first three books in the series, so here I go. It was D&D YouTuber Matt Colville (author of Priest), who talked up the books enough to finally make me give ‘em a read. I’ve mentioned before that Fantasy isn’t my genre, so it’s no surprise I never read this. ![]() ![]() Comer calls this the “brains on a stick” teaching method, since it only teaches facts to children and “ignores their feelings, relationship needs and capacities, dreams, and aspirations.” But Comer’s book goes much further than restating the problems with No Child Left Behind: He presents a viable alternative. ![]() For one, he says, increased reliance on testing means more class time must be spent teaching to tests instead of helping kids develop general skills they’ll need to be productive adults. James Comer crystallizes many of the law’s flaws in his recent book, Leave No Child Behind. ![]() More than three years later, these criticisms have only intensified. Before the act even became law, it was widely criticized for, among other things, relying heavily on standardized tests to determine whether a school or school district receives a carrot or a stick. ![]() In early 2002, the Bush Administration launched its attempt to reverse these trends with the No Child Left Behind Act. ![]() The news is full of stories of illiterate high school graduates, weapons and drugs on campuses, and “impossible children” who are incapable of being taught. Teachers, parents, and politicians regularly bemoan the quality of America’s public school system. ![]() ![]() I remember it was my favorite book of the year that year, actually! In fact, it’s one that I find myself constantly reaching for when feeling stressed or anxious, and so I tend to read it at least once (sometimes twice) a year since it came out in 2015. Walk Through Fire is one of my favorite reads ever. ĭisclaimer : I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, but it does not influence my opinion of the book nor the contents of this review in any way.
