The last bear by hannah gold6/10/2023 "When I looked into its history, I discovered it was called Bear Island because of the polar bears which once lived there but these days, due to the melting sea-ice in the Arctic, polar bears can no longer reach the island which was named after them. It's a remote Arctic outpost, uninhabited except for a weather station. I stumbled across a real life island off the coast of Norway called Bear Island. "The idea of a polar bear came to me and when researching where to set the story. Hannah said: "When I decided to write this book, I made a conscious decision to write about everything that I most loved in the world which is animals, our relationship with them and my passion to protect and conserve our planet. The book is endorsed by Hannah's favourite children's author, Michael Morpurgo, who described it as "deeply moving and quite unforgettable". April believes there are no polar bears left on the island, until she meets one and starts the most important journey of her life. The story follows April and her father on a scientific expedition to the Arctic.
